Venezuela: UN Committee Says Violence Against Women is Widespread
Violence against women is prevalent and increasing in Venezuela, according to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Committee). In particular, the CEDAW Committee found that trafficking in women and girls for sexual exploitation is a serious problem in Venezuela. The Committee also noted that Venezuela lacked adequate shelter for women victims of violence. In general, the Committee expressed its concern about the country’s lack of good data on the “forms, prevalence, and causes of violence against women.” To address many of these problems, the CEDAW Committee urged Venezuela to fully implement the country's "Women’s Right to a Life free from Violence Act" and improve women's access to justice.
The CEDAW Committee reviewed Venezuela's combined seventh and eighth periodic reports detailing the country’s efforts to comply with the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women on October 21, 2014. The Committee released its concluding observations and recommendations for Venezuela on November 7, 2014.
