Egypt: Lawsuit Filed Against Compulsory Virginity Testing

A lawsuit has been filed against officials in Egypt, challenging forced virginity tests in military prisons and detention centers. The possible arrest of protesters precipitated the lawsuit. Women who are arrested may be placed in detention centers that practice virginity tests.

The groups and organizations that filed the case are calling for the immediate end to compulsory virginity testing. The groups state that the examinations are a violation of bodily integrity and severe discrimination against women based upon CEDAW and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
