Canada: Task Force Releases Comprehensive Report on Trafficking in Women and Girls

The National Task Force on Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls in Canada has released a report outlining the bleak realities of sex trafficking in Canada, including the brutal physical and sexual violence suffered by young girls who are trafficked for sex. Of note, the report’s authors found that Canadian aboriginal women and girls are targeted more than any other group by traffickers, and in very large numbers due to high rates of poverty, low levels of education and no family support network.

The report, “’No More’: Ending Sex-Trafficking In Canada,” is a comprehensive review of all aspects of human trafficking in Canada, including risk factors that make girls more vulnerable to trafficking, the economics of the commercial sex trade in Canada, limitations on accurate data collection, and gaps in Canada’s compliance with the U.N. Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons Especially Women and Children, ratified by Canada in 2002. The report also details obstacles to holding perpetrators accountable and protecting and supporting victims.

The report ends with a series of recommendations to end human trafficking in Canada, including amendments to the country’s Criminal Code, strong victim protection requirements and coordinated action across Canada and its provinces.
