Antarctica: "Pervasive Problem" of Sexual Violence Being Investigated at US Research Base
The United States' National Science Foundation (NSF) is sending investigators this month to the nation's McMurdo research station in Antarctica to investigate reports of "pervasive" sexual violence among staff there. A 2022 NSF report found that 59 percent of women at the site indicated they had experienced harassment or assault there, with alcohol a factor in some cases. In October, the NSF decided to stop serving alcohol in the site's bars, but workers can still purchase alcohol in the site's store.
