Sudan: UN Expert Condemns Silence Surrounding Violence Against Women
Government and civil society must acknowledge and address violent crimes against women in Sudan, according to Rashida Manjoo, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Violence against women, its causes and consequences. In a statement published at the end of her twelve-day mission to Sudan, the Special Rapporteur condemned "the silence and the denials” that surround the issue of violence against women in Sudan. She said Sudanese women live in conditions of “deep inequality, underdevelopment, poverty and sometimes [a] hostile environment.” The Special Rapporteur said she was particularly concerned about the prevalence of forced and early marriages in Sudan, as well as the harmful practice of female genital mutilation.
