New Resource: Ending Violence Against Women in Afghanistan

Years after the Taliban’s overthrow, the women of Afghanistan still suffer from immense discrimination and violence. In August 2009, a law in Afghanistan criminalized child marriage, the selling and buying of women to settle disputes, assault, and more than a dozen other acts of violence against women. But the law is far from being adopted in practice.
A recent UN report examines the implementation of Afghanistan’s Law on Elimination of Violence against Women, following up on last year’s report entitled “A Long Way to Go.” The current report shows the number of incidents involving violence against women is rising, with few instances being reported or prosecuted.
