South Africa: Parole Release of Oscar Pistorius Generates Debate

Oscar Pistorius, the Olympic sprinter who was found guilty and imprisoned for fatally shooting his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through their home's bathroom door in 2013, has been released on parole.   A spokesman for the Steenkamp family has said that one of the provisions of the parole is that Pistorius undergo therapy for gender-based violence issues. Reeva's mother, June Steenkamp, has said she did not oppose the parole but believes Pistorius has not been fully rehabilitated and could pose a threat to other women.  South Africa has high rates of violence against women, with almost 900 women killed between July and September 2023 alone.
