Ecuador: First Emergency Room Dedicated to Victims of Gender-Based Violence

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Public Health, with assistance from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), opened the first emergency room dedicated to victims of gender-based violence in the country. The new emergency room is in San Lorenzo, an area with many reported cases of gender-based violence.

The government of Ecuador estimates that 83,000 women are victims of physical, sexual or psychological violence each year. IOM and the Ministry of Health have conducted training for health professionals and begun a public awareness campaign in the region on women’s human rights and the prevention and response to gender-based violence.
