Europe: Victims of Domestic Violence Suffer from Austerity Measures

A recent report by Women Against Violence Europe revealed that only one third of European countries have a free national helpline for victims of domestic violence in compliance with Council of Europe recommendations, and only 5 out of 46 countries have the necessary number of shelters for battered women.

”While the recession and austerity measures are having a detrimental effect on the prevalence of violence against women, they are also having a negative effect on women’s ability to escape the violence,” said Pierrette Pape from the European Women’s Lobby.
