Sweden Initiates Action Plan against Prostitution

In July the Swedish government implemented a new plan to combat prostitution and human trafficking. Initial funding is set at SEK 213 million (21.3 million Euros) over the next two years.

Action areas include protection and support for people at risk, prevention, standards and efficiency of the judicial system, national and international cooperation, and knowledge and awareness.

In 1999, Sweden became the first country to outlaw the buying of sex and decriminalized selling sex with its Law on Purchase of Sexual Services. This has been found to correlate with a decrease in the number of people trafficked into Sweden.
