Sweden Increases Measures Against Rape

Sweden

has recently instituted several measures to combat rape, including increased prevention, evidence collection and prosecution. The measures follow studies showing increased reports of rape over the last few years, but continued low rates of prosecution and convictions. Last month,

Sweden

’s Ministry of Integration and Gender Equality reformatted the layout of some urban areas, including additional street lighting, in part to help prevent outdoor sexual assault. On 25 November 2008, International Women’s Day, Uppsala University’s National Center for Knowledge on Men's Violence Against Women released a new rape kit to help collect and preserve physical evidence for criminal prosecution. The Center will distribute 2000 kits to Swedish hospitals next year with information for medical staff. Finally, the National Police Board began a new police training program on rape on 15 December 2008 to better assist rape victims.
