US: House approves controversial bill to restrict transgender women’s participation in sports

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act,” a bill that prohibits transgender women from participating in women’s sports at educational institutions receiving federal funding. The legislation defines sex based solely on reproductive biology and genetics at birth, effectively banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports. The bill passed with a vote of 218-206, with two Democrats joining Republicans in support. While the bill has passed the House, its future in the Senate remains uncertain due to the filibuster rule requiring a 60-vote majority.
