Iraq: Study Links War to Sharp Increase in Early Pregnancy and Child Marriage
A recent study published in the journal Population and Development Review found a sharp increase in the number of adolescent pregancies during the Iraq war, a likely consequence of more girls marrying early or as children. Study author Valerie Cetorelli of the London School of Economics and Political Science said many girls were denied access to education and public life during the war because of concerns about physical security and harassment. Cetorelli said, “[t]his trend is worrisome because married teenagers have lower status in the home and may be at higher risk of domestic violence. Teenage childbearing is also linked to higher risk of maternal deaths and poorer health outcomes for children.”
