Romania: Women face growing challenges to access reproductive healthcare

A recent report by Human Rights Watch reveals that women and girls in Romania are encountering increasing challenges in accessing legal abortion, contraception, and sexual and reproductive health information. Despite abortion being legally permitted for up to 14 weeks of pregnancy, over 80% of public medical facilities nationwide do not offer abortion services, pushing many to seek costly private clinics. Additionally, anti-abortion groups and crisis pregnancy centers employ misleading tactics to dissuade individuals from pursuing abortions, further restricting access to essential reproductive healthcare.
